*** steps on the soapbox Jason did last week****

Does STO have it's flaws? Yes, what game doesn't. As most of you know I play Mechwarrior Online with a group of guys when I'm not over here. So there is this one guy.......

He starts a thread just bashing Neverwinter ending it by throwing STO in there as being a train wreck. Me, well I decide I would take the troll bait if you will and respond. Pointing out that he might would enjoy Neverwinter if he just stepped back and allowed himself to have fun with it. I of course defended STO and pointed out that even if it takes time, Cryptic does fix mistakes and that NW was in fact just released (of course there are going to be problems).

Well he decides to go with bashing STO for being a pay to win game. That you HAVE to BUY top tier ships and how selling a T3 and T5 Excelsior is "confusing" and cause people to waste money. He also clearly points out he played the game for 3 months.

So I point out that you can earn any ship in game as long as your not a lazy terd and take the time to earn it in game. Also that if you don't read what your buying.......well your just stupid and lazy once again. Of course I added that anyone skilled can take out a slightly "better" ship, aka any RA ship can take on a fleet, c-store, or retro and still win.

I mean seriously, don't go hating on a game calling shit game flaws and it pay to win when they are instead human flaws and laziness. It just discourages ppl to try something they might want play because your an ignorant ass and/or related to Blod.

Out of all the MMOs I've tried, this one not only is the best looking, it's also the only MMO that stays true to the franchise it's based on. Not many games can do that and make it into an original MMO title like that. I'm actually happy as a Trek fan because that's what this game is aimed towards. TREKKIES!!! To me, Cryptic has more than achieved that goal.

I want to say it took me about 3 weeks to a month of consistent, goal oriented play to grind this out.

I kind of hate the 'pay to win' label, but in some cases, it's applicable. STO is not one of those cases - you can, in this F2P model, 'play to win' - you need not ever spend a dime. You might not have the ship the day it's released (unless you plan ahead and stockpile resources; waiting for the ship you really want to hit the store) - but you can get any ship eventually.

Many free to play games - MWO being one of them - do not allow this. You either pay cash for the Champion/Hero mech, or you play with the standard free variants.

Nonetheless, if you spend $100 on zen, and I do not, then we are not really on equal footing. But, you can spend that $100 and still FUCKING SUCK. No game in the North American market sells any item in their store that just allows you to win by default. You still have to be competent enough as a player to be able to win encounters, pve or pvp. Having a T5 excelsior is no guarantee of victory; and it has in fact been my long experience that players who are heavily reliant on cash purchases to equip their characters (or even buy them outright) are often lacking in game knowledge, at the least. I guess what I'm saying is that while all of us here buy ships, and some open lockboxes, there's a difference between that and other games, where you can literally purchase a max level character with full gear and start playing a game where you have no idea what you're doing.

Pay to Win, in that sense, has been in every single MMO I've ever played in; as you have always been able to dial up china and have them powerlevel a character for you, and/or buy gold from them to gear your toon.

The F2P model brings out the most spoiled, entitled mindsets into the genre I've ever had the displeasure of witnessing. In the case of NW, here is a game with no box price, no sub fee, yet if PWE wants to charge for a character slot, they're labeled as money grubbing cash whores with a pay to win scheme. If you treat NW the way I did - as an endeavor that requires a purchase - you would have most of the things you want, whether its bank slots, character slots, mounts, or whatever. I guess PWE is just supposed to make a game exactly like a normal sub MMO, but not charge anything, out of the kindness of their hearts.

i agree with almost everything that has been said here but one (and i might have just read it wrong)
not all cash perchaseable items in game are better. in world of tanks they have " premium" tanks that are in no way superior to the tanks in that tier ( in a lot of cases there worse)

the only good thing about them is they are already elite and start generating convertible xp right out of the gate. they can not be upgraded with better guns engines tracks and so forth.
they do have some small advantages but they are not game winners
for example the tend to ( but not always ) generate credits faster and becuse the are already elite the can exelarate crue taining from the start.

i have one and use it for the "free xp " ( free xp can be used on any vehicle" fot things i dont want to grind out (m3 lee for those who play you know what a pain this tank is )

i agree with everything said. i always have been a Star Wars guy. i don't look down on star Trek and it's fans, because out of all the nerds, fan boys/girls out there, we are the most ostracized (Wars and Trek fans). i have been playing games for a long time, and i have to admit, out of the ones i play now WOW, LOL, WOT, SWTOR, before it got shoot down COH/COV, and of course STO. this is probably the first game i have had the most fun playing.

first, who doesn't want to command their own ship? that is one of the coolest things ever.

second, yes there are items to buy or earn, but that is one of the charms of this game. it's not just handed to you. cryptic isn't saying "oh, you play and whine so were going to give you everything". and the romulan stuff and new UI is amazing.

third, this play style speaks to me, there is actually some strategy and thinking that goes into what you do in game ie. ships/crews/loadouts.

fourth, and i think the most important to me as a player. i have met more friendly, and helpful peeps in game then any other i have ever played. belonging to this fleet is amazing. being able to enter a zone or encounter and know that other ships in the AO not only have your back but actually help is awesome.

i personally have more fun in the short time i have played this game and belonged to this fleet, then the 6+ years i have given WOW and the guild i belong to. you guys rock.

Agree with most of the above. I've been on-line gaming since "Tribes," and I do remember life at 300 baud as well. Two things come to mind:

1) Haters gonna hate, no matter what; and

2) "If you have hate in your heart, let it out" - Clayton Bigsby

Frack'em, life on-line and off-line moves on.
