re: Tactical / Strike Squadrons

I am not sure where this thread should go, so I figured here is as good as any.

My personal play style in space based combat games has been to stick to smaller, faster, attack ships.

Tactics that I have used in other games (primarily EVE) have been:

1. Assualt or Heavy Assult ships, hunting in pack.
2. Electronic Warfare Frigates or Interceptors, tackling support.
3. Frigate or Cruiser suicide zerg squadrons.
4. Cruiser Anti-drone operations.
5. Stealth Assualt (Covert Ops).

Are there any plans for creating a Tactical Fleet / Squadron based on this overall concept?

Well, my thoughts on the matter would be;

If we are all assigned to a task force, with our ships (which I think we will be), a task force can have multiple commands within it. I.E.;

Task Force 79 (example)
Engineering Division: This division would be responsible for resource gathering, and construction.

Tactical Division: This division would be responsible for securing resource mining zones. In addition, the tactical division is tasked with scouting ahead of a larger fleet body, to secure potential hostile zones. Should any offensive campaign be conceived, this division will be responsible for taking the "point" position in front of the fleet.

Science Division: This division will be responsible for exploration, scientific discovery and advancements, as well as Research and Development

Medical Division: This division will be responsible for medical support, and medical research.

I think we should break it down such as;

Fleet Admiral (Runs the fleet)
Fleet Vice Admiral (Assists in running the fleet)
Fleet Chief of Staff (Staff reports to COS)
Fleet Ops Officer (Coordinates Fleet Missions)
Fleet Vice Ops Officer (Task Force CO's report to Vice Ops, who reports to Ops Officer)
Fleet Personnel Officer (Coordinates Crew training in game (I.E. if you need a bridge officer trained, but you lack the skill, the Personnel officer finds a trainer, or coordinates crew transfer)
|
Task Force Commanding Officers (coordinate ships within their task forces)

At the Task Force level, a Task Force Commanding officer can determine if he/she wants to have "Strike teams" as you were suggesting, for a specific role

Personally I would like to see some response here from the command staff.
The suggestion of smaller attack squadrons can be a lot of fun.

My experience in big fleet battles... the lag often ruined the experience.

I participated in a number of fleet battles where there were several hundred pilots in the fray.

From that stand point of view, I think there is merit in smaller actions.

Personally I hope STO makes zerg tactics worthless in some way... a highly organized force even through smaller should never loose to a huge mass with no control. Either way sign me up for all the PvP my little DPS ships can handle.

No matter what I say, or how you may take it. I'm only saying it because I stand up for what I believe in. You should never take it personally, if you do that for me I will do it for you.
