re: Solomon Cain

***Updated 9/28/15***

Born on Earth, Solomon Cain spent most of his childhood traveling the world. Through his parents, both of whom were archaeologists, Solomon was exposed to the many of the world’s natural and cultural wonders. This lifestyle however, left him little time to make many friends or establish any meaningful relationships with other kids his age. Despite the lack of social interaction with his peers, Solomon actually enjoyed his time with his parents an even developed a passion for archaeology, and after turning 18, was accepted into a prestigious university in what was then called the United Kingdom to study to become an archaeologist himself. But deep down Solomon wanted to be a part of something larger, to be part of a community. By then end of his first year, Solomon had gain the praise of many of his professors and was well liked by his peers. He even managed to make a few good friends, and for a short time, had a steady girlfriend. But eventually his need to be a part of something larger won out, and against the advice of his parents, friends and professors, Solomon left school to join the Army.

Military life offered Solomon everything he was looking for: structure; purpose; and most of all a community to belong to. During his time in the service Solomon proved himself to be an adept soldier and capable leader, eventually becoming a NCO and leading troops in combat. While in the military he met a young woman with whom he fell in love with. The two were eventually married and had two children. Although Solomon loved the Army he joined during a dark period in Earth’s past and deployed several times to combat zones. But after his third tour of duty, the stress of multiple combat tours and the ever increasing time he had to spend away from his family, started to weigh on him. After eight years of what had otherwise been a promising career, Solomon decided to leave the service to focus on his family.

Unfortunately, re-adjusting to military life had proven more difficult than he had anticipated. Sensing the stress her husband was under, Solomon’s wife suggested they spend a few weeks in her hometown on the outskirts of San Francisco. One day he decided to go into the city to do some exploring on his own. In reality, he wanted to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, but his family had objected to the idea of do it as a group. While walking across the famed bridge there was an unexplained explosion that claimed several lives. Although search crew looked for days, it appeared as though Solomon Cain was one of the victims.

What seemed like mere moments later, Solomon found himself on what was left of the Golden Gate Bridge. Looking around he quickly noticed that San Francisco had been the site of an apparent attack, only this wasn’t his San Francisco. Although he had survived the blast he realized the he had been seriously injured. Solomon had seen his share of gruesome injuries during his time in the Army and assumed he wouldn’t make it, even if he received immediate medical attention.

The next thing Solomon remembered was walking up to find that his injuries were gone. Upon scanning his surroundings, he realized that he was in some sort of medical facility. Everything looked strange, different. There were monitors with information flashing across the screen that he couldn’t understand and machines whose purpose he could only guess at. Then there was a chime and a door across the room opened. A woman with strange tattoos on her face and neck entered. The woman, realizing that Solomon had never seen a Trill before assured him that everything would be ok, but that they had much to discuss. Over the next few days, he learned that the explosion on the bridge had been the result of an as yet unexplained temporal event, during an attack on Earth by an alien species known as the Breen, which catapulted him more than 350 years forward in time. Solomon also learned, besides the fact that Earth was now part of an interstellar government known as the UFP, that his sudden leap through time had caused quite a stir, and researchers from across the galaxy had come to try and determine the cause of his time travel.

Much to his surprise, almost three months had passed since that day on the bridge, The woman who had been working with him was named Lt Ezri Dax, who, to his amazement, had travelled with her colleague, Dr. Julian Bashir, from a space station in another part of the galaxy.  Apparently, the phenomenon that caused him to leap frog through time, also had an effect on his physiology. He learned the reason for his being kept in stasis was that the regeneration rate of the cells in his body were fluctuating wildly. After several attempts by members of both the Trill Science Ministry and the Vulcan Science Academy, Dr. Bashir was brought in as a final attempt to stabilize his condition. As a counselor, Dr. Bashir thought it might be . . . “helpful” if Lt. Dax came along in case he was successful. While Dr. Bashir was able to stabilize Solomon’s condition, his natural aging process had been severely altered. Dr. Bashir assured him that he would be able to resume a normal life, but quipped that due to his decelerated aging he would “out-live a Vulcan twice over.”

Over the next few months, with the help of Lt. Dax, Solomon was able to at least partially come to terms with the fact that his family and everyone he knew was long since dead. At first he pleaded for Starfleet to send him back to his own time after Dax unintentionally told him that time travel was possible. Dax also informed Solomon that he had a several descendants still alive and at her urging Solomon to reached out to them. For the next 10 years Solomon lived with one of his descendants, Robert Cain, his wife Mary, and their newborn son, Noah. Solomon was able to adapt to his new life rather easily and even began to think of himself as part of their family. However, he eventually realized that everyone around him was growing older while he barely looked a day older than he did that fateful day on the bridge.

Realizing that he was still out of place in this new world, Solomon slowly withdrew from his extended family and eventually left Earth altogether. For several years he wandered from planet to planet searching for his place in the Galaxy. Solomon eventually found himself on the Trill home world. Trill Society was often a topic of discussion during his counseling sessions with Lt. Dax, so he figured it was as good a place as any. He eventually meet a young Trill woman who had recently been joined. Having to come to terms with several lifetime’s worth of experience herself, the two immediately connected and soon began a relationship.
