re: Torp escort build help
by CPT Darrick Lurr on 06/08/17 6:15
Greetings all,
So I am working on perfecting a good escort torp boat that I could use a little help/ advice as far as equipment and or ship to run with. I fly with mostly escort variations and have most of the reputation sets. I am also trying to do this on a budget, don't have the money to buy ships for traits, equip or lobi equip. Any advice and or help would be sweet.
P.S. I only have a month or two before I can purchase the chimera, which will become a torp platform once I can.

Sir -- I have tried a full torpedo build and wasn't happy with it; on BoPs and Raptors (KDF Side). However, I am very pleased with a combination built of two Torps up front along with either dual heavy cannons or dual beams. I also like the Torpedoes from some the Reputation sets so you get that extra punch for from Rep Set itself. Also, you can craft a very awesome torpedo as well. Just have to watch the cool-downs.
These dudes tend to know what they are writing about. However, with all the playing around Cryptic has been doing these days, well.....

Also, part of the game is just experimenting with your ships and seeing what you like do with them. In spite of having a 20 or so ship at my disposal (per Toon); I find myself going to the same ship again and again for general play. I have very good luck with some of my carriers having two torpedoes up front along with Torp II or III in my Tactical slot. It like raining hellfire on my enemies.

I do not know much about the Chimera, but if you are saving up some cash to buy one ship for a torpedo boat, I would STRONGLY recommend the Valiant and then equip it with at least three pieces of the Terran Task Force Munitions Set to get the bonus to torpedo damage from it. The Valiant's Quantum Warhead Module is essentially a" torpedo shotgun." It is also a "free" torpedo array, too. The Quantum Warhead Module, with a good build, will pretty much trash anything in PVE. With the other suggestions Thu'fir made, you could easily turn that Valiant into a beast. I have a Valiant with a torpedo build on it and I can solo a Borg Red Alert in it.
Just my two-cent's worth. Go for the Valiant and Quantum Warhead goodness.

Slight off-top. I have been running quad disruptor/phasers cannons on several of my ship builds. Someone mentioned that the power drain is too much for the ship and I should drop down to dual cannons instead of dual heavy cannons as support. I tend to always have two turrets on the rear along with a torpedo. Thoughts?

it really depends on ur build, if you are noticing power level issues and cant rebuild around an eps/drake/aux2batt/half - then maybe so. also, alot of people say use dual cannons over dual heavy cannons becuase they fire faster and higher chance to proc whatever the proc is. one trick is, on those turrets in the back, make sure they have the [rapid] mod, that will proc rapid fire for ALL cannons on your ship.

CPT Lurr,
The problem with full torp boats is their individual cooldown and the shared cooldown. You need to choose your torpedoes based on cooldown timers, otherwise you're effectively cutting one or more sets of torpedoes out of your firing cycle (especially if you're using autofire).
The Projectile Weapons Officers that reduce torpedo cooldowns are a MUST, as well. they get a set chance to reduce the cooldowns. The rarer the officer, the more the reduction.
Also, think shield mitigation. Shields are the enemy of torpedoes, so look for ways to reduce shields on your enemies. (I combined a science drain boat with torpedoes for one of my torp boats).
It will take time to learn how to balance your torpedoes and timings, but when you do, you'll find that as soon as a shield facing goes down, that enemy your targeting has only the travel time of the torpedo to live.
As for the Valiant- Yes, this is a great cloak vape ship (I also have one with the 3 piece set and enjoy the booms), but I don't think I'd consider it a traditional torp boat. It depends more on its special console and cloak than a torp boat would. Besides, I think the Chimera is the one that comes with the Lifetime sub, and I don't think we'd want to rob him of his other goodies!
If you are buying a sub, I'd wait a little bit. It is bound to go on sale again. It was July and September last year, I think.

I started a new thread on this topic, so as not to threadjack. Answered your question in a post there Sir.

I am currently using the Fleet Tact Escort, and yes I love the quantum warhead mod. In terms of damage it is second in line after the Neurotic torp, which will get crits high as +70K.
I just got done looking at the Terran set that was mentioned, and I will be defiantly getting the last piece which is the cannons for me. I am going to have to replace my CC bio turret with a torp to fit it. But from the looks of things initially I don't have much to loose from dropping that torp.
I have the next couple of days off thank god, I will be posting equip and stats after I acquire that last piece of the terran.

Will;
I am using the manticore torp build as a basis but on a vailent class ship so far. I don't have the resources to get some of the things he has equipped, but so far I am actually quite impressed how that little ship holds up. I was up against 3 other players in core assault and I didn't have a problem holding up to them and taking them down.
I am running with 3 very rare torp officers atm, and yes they are a must. Right now I consistently fire 1 torp a second. coupled with shield drain/ shield penetration and radiation effects shields usually don't hold up vary long. Or I completely bypass them and do massive damage straight to hull (quantum warhead mod on a full spread will usually do 30k even with a fully shielded target straight to hull).
My only concern is when I switch from the counter comand 4 piece to the setup of the manticore setup. I have great survivability right now and I am not sure if that is going to translate over when I loose the abilities the CC set offers.
Again, still testing and playing around. So I will get back to everyone after I have played around with the build.
