.S.S. Carolina / NCC-42050

The U.S.S. Carolina (NCC-42050) was a Federation Centaur-class medium cruiser that began it's Starfleet career in 2355.  It was named after the region on Earth located on the North American continent.

The Carolina was assigned to the 7th Fleet as a destroyer escort vessel equipped with a total of 12 type IX phaser emitters (3 more than standard) and 4 torpedo launchers (2 more than standard).  It was 1 of the 14 ships, from the 7th's original force of 112 ships, to survive the engagement against the Dominion in the Tyra System.  The Carolina saw action at Sybaron, Tibor Nebula, and the Kalandra Sector with the 7th Fleet. The ship and it's crew were awarded many battle field commendations while it remained being assigned to the 7th Fleet, which was rebuilt after the war and become known as a prestigious posting in Starfleet.

In 2377, the Carolina was commanded by Captain Peterson and was ordered by Admiral Owen Paris to intercept a Ferengi D'Kora-class vessel that was interfering with the Pathfinder Project's efforts to communicate with the U.S.S. Voyager that was stranded in the Delta Quadrant.

In 2380, the Carolina was upgraded to receive an additional 6 more phaser emitters and continued to serve in the 7th Fleet as a border patrol vessel until the year 2387 when it was reassigned to freighter escort duties and transporting diplomats within the Federation.

Starfleet began work in developing an Excelsior II class due to the success of the original hull.  As part of this initiative, it was decided to continue refit schedules on original Excelsior class ships that were built from 2350 onward, and had not exceeded 50 years in their original 80 year expected cycle.  The Carolina was reassigned to border security after receiving an additional refit in 2400.

The ship was assigned to Captain B. Huckabee, who had proven himself to be a formidable captain in a Defiant class within the 7th Fleet, in 2410.  It was at his request after his previous assignment was completed and once the Carolina had completed an additional refit the same year, but still needing it's own Captain replacement.  With it's new refit, the Carolina was reassigned from a sector to patrol the border to a Rapid Reaction vessel to respond where needed.  This was due in part to the new battery of weaponry and defensive systems that placed it on par with any battlecruisers currently serving in Starfleet.

Rumors are still being heard amongst the fleet that the Carolina may eventually receive a full upgrade to it's current hull to be reclassified as an Excelsior II class, much like the vessel NCC-42037 that was renamed Excelsior in honor of the original ship when it was upgraded to the II class.

Updated (in hopes of an Excelsior II coming to game in future)
