Here are a bunch of Chicago Area stuff to go see:

Map of Chicago Attractions  (Google Maps) I mapped out the Hotel, casino, Gino's Pizza by the hotel, and a number of sites I've been to over the years.  Most of the site are within a 2.5 to 3 mile strip of the Downtown area.  The only place I haven't been to is the old Sears Tower (now called the Willis Tower).  The 2 locations not in the Downtown area are the Science Museum (south) and the Bahia Temple in Wilmette, IL (north).  The Bahia Temple I included because it is a really beautiful building and it is unusual because it has 9 sides (the star associated with the Bahia faith has 9 points).

Just a note to FADM's post.  We will need to commit to this early, meaning we will need to make decisions on hotel reservations and ticket purchases as they post.  Since the Gold tickets are already on sale now, we are probably looking at Copper going on sale by the end of January to the beginning of February.  It is being held at the same hotel, the Westin O'Hare, and we can reserve rooms now at $149 a night and can accommodate up to 4 people per room with twin beds and cots (with a $30 per each over 2 persons, up to four, per night).

Davis and I shared a room last June and it was comfortable for two, but may be bit cramped with more.  It cost the two of us a little less that $250 apiece for the room for three nights and 4 days.  We got in Thursday night for preregistration.

Last years Copper tickets cost $150.  They may try to jack up the price for the 50th, but the smaller venues I can't see them bumping the price too much.

Here is the link to the Hotel: https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/SI04AA  I would reserve the room now - whether or not you have made a decision to go, so you have a room if you do go.

The hotels normally have a liberal cancellation policy - the worst I have seen is a three day before the event policy.  Most have a 24 hour policy.

Here is the link to the Chicago Creation event:  http://www.creationent.com/cal/stchi.htm

And, please, post that you have made reservations and then post that you have tickets as you place them.  This way we can drum up support to make the event with the other members.  See you all there.

JT

I just booked my room - 2 double beds - $149 per day convention rate - with taxes $505.11.  The hotel's cancellation policy is to cancel by 4pm the day before you are to stay.  As I did last year, I will be looking for a roommate again.  Davis, I give you first dibs.  If anyone is hard pressed to get a room and save some money, a cot can be added, or I think I have an air mattress I can bring, since I will be driving up from St. Louis.  Adding a 3rd person is a $30.00 fee plus occupancy taxes and open discussion on rotation of sleeping arrangements will determine how much each pays (if someone sleeps on an air mattress or cot for 3 nights shouldn't have to pay as much - unless we all rotate through the lesser accommodation - then it is even-stevens).

 I'm in JT.

I haven't talked to my wife yet, but it's in September...plenty of time to stash away a little fun money.

The hotel is near the Chicago O'Hare Airport...nearby park is possible but unlikely.

Some random rambling from what I remember about last year at the Chicago Con.

If anyone has any questions ask on this thread.  We had a nice little group of us meet up in Chicago for the last con, and might be able to answer your questions.

The hotel is near the airport (but not an airport hotel)...rooms were nice and clean.  A few of us brought laptops with the intention of gaming together, but we never found the time.

The hotel has a decent bar and restaurant (prices were about average for a hotel...nothing too crazy)  We ate breakfast across from Armin Shimmerman (Quark) on more than one occasion.

The con is located in the hotel, so you don't have to worry about transportation once you arrive.

We found a couple of decent pizza places and a Casino within walking distance, but I believe McDonalds was nearby too if that's more your speed.

The Chicago Con is great.  It's the 2nd biggest, but significantly smaller that Vegas.  We found it to be the perfect size for us.  We had enough stuff to do to keep from getting bored, but the smaller size made it much easier to find each other.

I was sooo upset I didn't get to go to the last one since I live only 20 minutes by bus from where the con is being help. I'm gonna try my utmost to make it this year.

Anton, with this much lead time, you should just put in the vacation time, to block it out, or whenever your business allows.  I am looking forward to finally meeting you, since you were the one that led me to the staff position I've held for about the past what 3.5 to 4 years.  You were then head of Task Force 80 - Engineering.  Damn, that seems like ages ago.

All I can say is, if you can't make it for the 3 days, a group of us are going to camp out on your doorstep and commandeer you before you can walk in your door!  At least for a day.

JT

FYI,  FCPT Davis has claimed space in my room as of last night.  I think we have space for one more without being too cramped, if there are any takers post in this string.

Might not make it this year due to a work conflict.  Might need to attend the Cherry Hill event.

I may or may not be able to make it, there's a lot for me to sort out if i wanted to go. i cant give any definitive answer s of now. But assuming that i can make things go to plan i might be able to make it and meet up with you guys. then you can throw out all the crazy Australian stereotypes you can possibly think of.
