re: The May Update

Good evening all,
I have a discussion/question ask thing to present to you all. So, with the update set for May, all T6 ships will have the level scale apply to them. So what does this mean to, say, the Oberth, a tier 1 only ship? I'll be using both the Oberth and the Akira variants as examples. In the case of the good old War Canoe, the Oberth could be changed to be a more tactical oriented variation of the Nova-class. This is in keeping with some continuity and lore speculation that questions if some of the systems of the Prometheus-class was tested on the Oberth. In the case of the Akiras', we could change the tier 3 variant (the Thunderchild) to become an escort/carrier like its brethren, and have it be a more tactical focused variation, the tier 5 variant (the Armitage) to be a more science focused ship. This would leave the tier 6 (the Alita) to be the engineer focused ship, similar to the Pilot-Escorts (Icarus, Mercury and Ajax). But what do you all think?

I'm not really clear on where you are going with this discussion/question.  The post I read specifically talks about T6 ships being scaled.  I don't remember reading anything where non-T6 ships like the Thunderchild, Armitage, and even Oberth scales up to the T6 level.  I don't seem them back tracking to make Tac/Sci/Eng variants for older ships like they have with the pilot escorts, the Odyssey, Vesta, etc.  Those ships were made in large part to offer new consoles and new skin options.    I see them continuing the trend of putting out single ships (like the Gagarin and Reliant) and on the occasion putting out a bundle pack.

Well, in the case of the Akira variants, a case can be made for the Armitage to remain tier 5, as they are still really good ships. It's just the Thunderchild is, as you say, made to offer new consoles and/or new skin options. My argument against having those kinds of ships is why would people spend $10 for a ship they would never use, other than to complete a set? With the make everything tier 6, the price would be bumped up, yes, but in return you would  actually get a ship you would use, rather than a console and skin.

Ok, I get what you are saying now.  It would be neat if they just made everything T6.  I'm all for opening up bridge officer seating anyway to allow people to simply fly whatever ship they love.  I love the Akira, but I got away from it due to it being too squishy in my opinion now even with stacking up some nice Engineering stuff.  That and it took till the Gagarin release to allow me to run the Excelsior like I always wanted to, with the 4 tactical abilities I wanted thanks to the unlocked ability.  With that said, I'm perfectly happy flying that classic around as my main for a good long time with the Reliant being my next choice to fly.  They will have to release a ship that really whoa's me before I jump into anything else.  You just can't beat the classic Trek look, especially with how much detail the Type 8 hulls were given.  I'd throw the Defiant back into the rotation but they really need to fix the visuals on it's hull.

Being more of a "purist," I would like to see the basic laws of physics followed on Star Trek and STO.  IMHO, STO is more of science fantasy (D&D) than science fiction.   For instance, the reason why ships got bigger in Star Trek is that the engines got bigger to achieve higher warp speeds.  Hence, the progression of larger ships in Star Fleet and KDF.  Heck, my KDF Vo'qua has two warp engines to push her around the stars.  However, this is just a game, and as such, if Cryptic sees an opportunity to make more money, they will.

Cheers

Yea, I've always wished this game was more of an RPG then an MMO with fluff.  I mean some real deep RPG.  I'm talking a fleet is alotted a certain number of ship types and a ship is "issued".  haha I know that would be the popular idea.  I'd at least like the top rank to be limited to Captain.  No way a Fleet Admiral is off doing all these adventures and away missions.

Agreed.  The leveling process is way to fast and easy.  The new players nowadays expect to be in unbeatable Tier Six ships with Mark 15 gold equipment with little or no effort.  A wise man once said:  Something given has no value.
