Started #3 on Classic difficulty, and it's definitely brutal. Everything takes a lot longer to research; and you don't start with an OTS, so being able to bump up your squad size takes a while. Aliens are more resilient and dish out more punishment. I can barely keep a squad together...

Classic or Classic Ironman? I'll have to load up my Classic that's in progress, but I was pretty sure I started with an OTS.

After one or two attempts, I've got what looks to be a viable Classic difficulty campaign underway.
1) My base is in Africa (got to love the income boost)
2) To aid in initial fund generation, I would sell off alien corpses, even if I didn't have them researched yet; same with the guidance computers, etc, if I was still a bit from researching them. I never sold all of an item, and only touched the computers if I was really needing funds. This helped sometimes mean the difference between building another Satellite Uplink and/or building another satellite to launch. The sooner you get sats aloft, the better you are for funds.
3) Get weapons researched before armor. If you can't do a lot of damage, the better chance you have of accidentally triggering another group and getting overwhelmed.
4) Bring a Rookie; depending on the mission, try to bring along at least one Rookie (or Squaddie). Even experienced soldiers can get whacked, and rather than reloading from the beginning, it's better to press on and complete the mission. You need soldiers getting experience and ranks as often as possible.
