It was a simple technical mistake - he misjudged the shot a touch and didn't get his body down fully in front of it. Unfortunately, goalkeepers aren't allowed to make technical mistakes, as they most times allow goals. It's the sort of thing I stressed again and again when I coached.

As Admiral Turner and I have discussed countless times over the years, the lack of a true scoring threat has always been a thorn in the US side. Also, some people that really needed to be on their A+ game (hint hint Clint & Landon) were nearly invisible for long stretches of the match. Jozy "Paper Tiger" Altidore did have one good run but mostly was his typical self, getting knocked off any ball he touched.

I frankly would put Dempsey up front where his laziness would not hurt as bad. His defense is dismal and Bob Bradley probably should have taken him out, although Clint is indeed one of those players that can make up for 89' of standing around with 1' of brilliance.

Overall, defensively, the lack of pressure on the ball was absolutely disturbing. Too many crosses were left unchallenged and the marking at times was practically non-existent.

We did a very good job on Wayne Rooney, even after Crouch came in who demanded more of Onyewu's time.

Gerrard and Lampard still can't figure out how to play together, which to me is amazing. Yes, Gerrard did score but he was also the one that Dempsey spun around prior to his goal. You also rarely heard his name called the entire match. Capello has some hard choices to make there. Simply too much talent to settle for such a performance.

Neither team was running on all cylinders and both have considerable room for improvement prior to their next matches. The US quietly took their gift of a point ... a result I thought prior to the game would have been outstanding. Despite their play, I still do.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good...

If the men can get out of Group play I'll call it good. I've always found it hilarious that our men's team is ... well, kind of 'meh' when compared to the rest of the world, that has been playing soccer for a very long time - but our women's team always beats the crap out of everyone... since we have actually been letting women play organized, funded team sports longer than any of those countries that typically dominate men's soccer.

Getting out of the group is definitely good, regardless of how we do it.
However, there should be some motivation to win the group as 2nd place in Group C will likely go up against Germany. The Motherlanders destruction of Australia yesterday showed me that they're still a team to watch out for (and my pre-WC pick to win the whole thing).
