Reading Suggestions for the Fleet

I was not sure if we had a section for this in our forums, but I will sticky it so this could be the go to place to find reading suggestions.

As an avid reader of Science Fiction, I had gravitated to Military Sci-Fi many years ago, as a college student. The books that I list here have either been read or currently spark my interest.

1. The Forever War, Joe Haldman - This is a MUST
READ!!!

2. EVE: The Empyrean Age, Tony Gonzales - Good
book, better if you played or still play EVE Online.

3. The Lost Fleet (series), Jack Campbell - I read
the first two, good fleet combat tactics.

4. Starstrike: Task Force Mars (series), Kevin
Dockery & Douglas Niles - I'm trying to get passed the first chapter
(struggle)- US Navy SEALS in space. I met Douglas Niles, had
lunch with him at Gen CON - 18 (1985).

My Birthday Presents just arrived:

5. Semper Mars (Heritage Trilogy), Ian Douglas -
Marines in space...need I say more? Required reading for all 7MD
(just kidding)....I will keep you all up to date on this one.

6. Star Trek Online: The Needs of the Many,
Michael A. Martin & Jake Sisko - I will keep you all up to date on
this one as well.

If you like Military Sci-Fi may i suggest the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. Start with:

"On Basilisk Station"

and by the time you finish that, you will be buying all 10 other books in the series.

John Ringo has a series of 4 books starting with "And there will be Dragons", that is Military Sci-Fi as well.

David Weber did another series with Steve White which is also excellent. The series starts with "In Death Ground". For actual time-line (not order that the books were released) buy "Crusade", then "In Death Ground", "Shiva Option", and finally "Insurrection". The last one wasn't as good in terms of tactics or strategy...but the first three give good details, and are awesome for creating a mindset of looking beyond your own ship. I will be cliche and suggest "Enders Game" as well. If only so that I won't see people acting like children surprised by the boogie man when an enemy attacks from above the common elliptic. Granted...I still haven't had any attacks from below...so maybe our enemies aren't as original as they think.

If you enjoy Michael A. Martins work then you should read some of his Enterprise material. Just do it in order to get the most impact...

3) The Romulan War - Beneath the Raptors Wing

David Drake has a series of short stories about a mercenary rank regiment Hammer's Slammers, excellent read

I also recommend the Bolo series by the late Keith Laumer and Armor by John Steakley
