Not like we didn't know this was going to happen. Personally, if handled appropriately, this could be very good for the title.
If you are a lifer, I wouldn't be terribly concerned. Odds are lifers will get the same deal as lifers over in Champions; you are basically recognized as a premium player (without having to pay the monthly fee assoicated with this status) and would probably get an allotment of free c-store points every month.

I have known this for 6 months, but I'm glad to see it finally validated. It will be good for the game, only way for them to keep their doors open in my opinion.

I pulled this off of another site:
| Quote: | So when Perfect World acquired Cryptic, one of the contribution from Perfect World to Cryptic is we can share our free-to-play experience with Cryptic. So I want to emphasize is that never we’ve done a free-to-play model game, so we’re going to launch this game in US and also in China, so we expect to run these type if free-to-play model game.
We have a bigger potential in US and also in China. And also Star Trek Online, after the acquisition, in fact Cryptic is working on the free-to-play model for Star Trek Online. This is going to be launched by the end of this year as well. So I think free-to-play model we have a bigger potential in US market and also in China market. Thank you.' |
Safe to assume the tenative time table for F2P STO is December. I would hope that the remainder of Season 4 is released first.
Season 5 will either be a paid expansion or its conetent will be tied to subscription or C-store bought content.
Edit...Straight off Cryptic:
| Quote: | In a recent Perfect World earnings call, CFO Kelvin Lau stated our intention to adopt a free-to-play business model for Star Trek Online this year and we could not be happier to finally share these exciting plans with you.
Incorporating a free-to-play model into Star Trek Online enables any interested captain to explore the galaxy to his or her heart's delight.
We do have a full announcement, more details regarding free-to-play, a breakdown of exactly what's on offer, a FAQ, and a features matrix all queued up for publish next week. Those familiar with our superhero MMO, the free-to-play Champions Online: Free for All, will recall the solid suite of information we published when we announced that game's free-to-play transition. We'll have similarly robust web pages and boards setup next week for STO. (Kind of like this, for example.)
We're committed to Star Trek Online, we're more experienced from launching Champions Online: Free for All, we're supported by a AAA online games publisher dedicated to putting forth quality Western-styled F2P games, and we can't wait to show you more.
Engage!

I attribute my prediction to Fleet Admiral Fortin's having granted me this honor many, many months ago.....
Of course, I am joking...mostly....but I am glad for one thing. If I'm going to be right about anything, I hope it is for the benefit of the fleet.
I feel this change will be just that, a great benefit to both the game and the fleet.

At the very least, this change over to the F2P model should bring alot of new people into the game. Unfortunately the maturity level will drop by almost 40%.

Actually, considering some of the names (character and ship) we have seen over the years, the maturity level was not extremely high to begin with. Its just seems the opposite because we have been somewhat isolated from that in the 7th Fleet.
We have actually rejected prospects due to their character / ship names.
Another advanatge to the F2P model for STO is this...
STO was going to lose a lot of subs when Star Wars the Old Republic launches. But, once that first 30 - 90 days comes to an end over there, many who played STO will likely return because it will be F2P.
Again, a prediction of mine, but I think a safe one. STO does provide a better MMORPG experience than SWTOR.

"Stipend of 400 points per month" Not a bad exchange for $15.00 per month!
400 points amounts to $5.00 worth, so it's the same as hvaing a subscritpion price of $10.00 per month, if you want to think of it that way.
