It definitely falls squarely in the fantasy genre, but is not necessarily the traditional orcs and wizards type of deal.

It does start off a bit slowly, as the author introduces the main characters and builds their relationships, about 1/3 of the way through it really takes off and I personally couldn't put it down at that point. Easily worth three measly dollars if you have an electronic reader; still worth $13 if you don't.

I promise you won't be disappointed. I read a lot of sci fi and fantasy myself, and this is as good as anything else you might pick up.
