re: School stuff

So, as I've announced a time or two before, I am starting, well, started, now, as a Freshman at Miami State University in Ohio. I had my books, my schedule and everything sorted out, to include how best to schedule my classes so they impacted the wife's work schedule the least.

Yesterday's classes went fine, as did this morning's. After this morning's class, I met with my academic adviser for the first time to go over what I was taking and to look towards next semester.

Turns out that two of my four courses won't really do me any good on the path towards my Major, though they do work, overall for the "Miami Plan." The biggie is I need Math 125 (Pre-Calc) instead of 115 (Math for Elementary Educators). The only class I could get to potentially work is, thankfully, with the same Math prof (whose class I had this morning). It's technically full, but with the section director's approval, they force add me.

Next, I have to ditch my Philosophy class (no big deal, honestly) for an "Educational Leadership" category class. We find a class with an opening that will work (as best as we can within my limitations).

So, happy that crisis was detected and fixed very early in the semester, I proceed to my car to get ready to head home instead of attending the PHL class I just dropped from. I had planned on heading by my wife's work to pick up our daughter and drop the scheduling change bomb on her; in order to have a decent grasp on my schedule before heading there, I start to write it out on paper on a day-by-day basis.

Rut-roh.

My newly scheduled Pre-Calc directly conflicts with my ENG 111 class two of the three days I have it. I walk back to the adviser's office to see if she's still in and inform her of the SNAFU. She was, and had just left a message on my home phone telling me about what I'd just discovered for myself.

Going through the available times/sections for the ENG class, we find one that's earlier in the day. This means that my wife will now have to be the one to put our son on the bus three mornings a week. The upside is I'll always be home in the afternoon to get our daughter out of preschool the two days a week she has it, and get our son off the bus in the afternoon.

Overall, yes, it's turbulence and frustrating, but definitely better to catch it this early on in the process than later, and waste some credit-hours and brain sweat on subjects that really wouldn't have helped me towards my goal.

ZOMG - Pre-Calc is dusting off a *lot* of cobwebs.

So far, first impression off all my profs/instructors - not a bad one of the bunch.

You think administrative bullshit is bad with college enrollment... try doing medical research. The oversight committee is efffing terrible to work with and never do their jobs.

I seriously hate, hate, hate, all the red tape that goes into this crap.

At least you're going to a 4-year and not a community college like I am. I've hit MANY walls where I'm at. So much that I ended up changing majors just because I found a new calling in radio. The worst part about it is that I've been at the same community college for a total of almost 10 years. At least you're willing to work with it and you caught the problem very early.

Out of curiosity, what is your major? Mine is in media arts.

I'm aiming for a Science Education major, but can't declare it until I have a GPA (and said GPA must be 2.5 or higher).

Didn't you just declare it in your post?

You funny, G.I. I can't officially declare it with the university.

So, this week and next are it for classes; the week after next is finals week - already. I'll be taking one actual final for my four classes, and that's Pre-Calc. Art is open book, open notebook, open internet, so I suspect it's a take-home. English has a final assignment, same as my EDL class.

I am so ready for the winter break.

So, had my only true final exam today - Pre-Calc.

ENG 111 was a final paper, ART 181 was an open book, open internet online final, and my EDL class had a final project, including a paper.

The Pre-Calc final was worth a max of 342 points; if we brought in canned goods for a faculty food drive, we could get an extra 2% on our exam grade. I was *really* wanting to get an A on this exam, as I was at a very high B up til this point. I did review yesterday for most of the evening, went to bed at 1, got up at 6 and did some more review prior to the exam at 8.

Our exam was split into two parts; first part was without calculator, second part was with. You turned in the first part before getting the second part (in case that wasn't obvious). When I turned in my second part, my prof (who was proctoring) told me I'd only missed 4 points on the first part. Later this afternoon, I was ecstatic to see my final exam score (including the bonus 8 points for the canned goods) was 340 out of 342 - a 99%! I'd have had a 97% without the canned goods, so I'd have had the same end result, so I am very, very happy with the results. I finished the course with a 91.28% average, which is an A-. I'm waiting on the official final grades, but as far as I can tell I have an A (or A-) average in all four of my classes.
