Where they come from ... my ship's names

I have (and like most here have had) more ships than I can begin to keep track of, and back in the days of limited ship slots this also meant decommissioning ships so that new ones could take their place. Amidst all of this I have been asked where I get my ships names and their meanings so I figured I would take a minute to list out all of my wonderful vessels and a bit about each one:

The following are "Legendary" weapons from WoW that I thought had pretty cool names/meanings:

U.S.S. Andonisus (Adv. Escort) - "Reaper of Souls"
U.S.S. Thori'dal (Dreadnought Cruiser) - "the Star's Fury"
U.S.S. Val'anyr (Adv. Heavy Cruiser Retrofit) - "Hammer of the Ancient Kings"

The name of the raiding guild I used to be GM of:

U.S.S. Sempiternal (Nebula Science) - of never-ending duration; Eternal

U.S.S. Decisive (Assault Cruiser) - WMEC 629 210' Medium Endurance Cutter (My sister was the XO of this cutter)
U.S.S. Reliance (Exploration Cruiser Retrofit) - WMEC 615 Medium Endurance Cutter
U.S.S. KITTIWAKE (Multi-Vector Adv. Escort) - WPB 87316 87' Patrol Boat
U.S.S. Marlin (Star Cruiser) - WPB 87304 87' Patrol Boat (My sister was the first female Captain of this boat)
U.S.S. Adelie (Captain's Yacht) - WPB 87333 87' Patrol Boat
U.S.S. Waesche (Venture Class Cruiser Refit) - WMSL 751 418' National Security Cutter
U.S.S. Osprey (Class F Shuttle) - WPB 87307 87' Patrol Boat
U.S.S. Sanibel (Runabout) - WPB 1312 110' Patrol Boat

From my sister being an officer in the U.S.C.G. and my work with the reserves and auxiliary I have a fondness for them.

U.S.S. McKinley (TOS Constitution) - Sentimental, it's the generated name of the very first ship I had when I started playing STO many moons ago, so I've always kept a ship in my inventory with this name.

U.S.S. North Carolina NCC-91777:
-5 ships real-world have carried the name and I am from/live in North Carolina. All my ships carried the name while leveling up. At CPT, I made a switch to Hurricane. At first I had went with calling my non-primary Excelsior by this name and NCC-91055 for the decorated WWII battleship BB-55. Upon joining the fleet, I re-named my Defiant the North Carolina and switched to NCC-91777, after the current vessel SSN-777 attack sub seeing as the Defiant w/ cloak is purty much a 24th-25th century sub.

U.S.S. Kitty Hawk NCC-91063:
-At first I renamed my Excelsior this, but after seeing how much a fun I could have with my Intrepid, I switched names to it and de-comissioned my Excelsior. Went with 91063 after the carrier that carried the name CV-63, which at one point in time was the real-world 7th Fleet Flagship. Went with this name mainly due to the ties it has to North Carolina (first flight) to keep an in-game theme to all my ship names.

I.K.S. Hurricane
-I'm a huge Carolina Hurricanes fan (NHL for those who dont know what hockey is) and had at first named my CPT-VA escorts this due to I didnt feel they carried the weight to be named after the battleship (at time didnt know there was a sub). Didn't really want to name my klingon ship with some random klingon name that had no meaning to me, so I went with tagging this on it since it dont sound "too" candy for a warriors ship.

I picked the name Leyte Gulf in honor of the brave crews of the 5 US Destroyers who through sheer guts and bluff delayed a force of Japanese battleships and cruisers intent on destroying the Philippine invasion fleet. The battle was possibly the most lopsided surface engagement in history...and yet the Japanese fleet withdrew in disarray without accomplishing their primary mission...Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is a vivid and gut wrenching account of this battle...and I highly recommend it

I found out later there is a Guided Missile Cruiser (CGN 55) that carries this proud name on active duty in the US navy right now...I have had the Leyte Gulf as my Primary ship since Closed Beta...it was with a heavy heart I decomissioned her recently in order to broaden my skills with other classes of ships.

The Vicksburg was named simply because it was a Civil War naval battle...and I hadn't seen anyone else using that name in game at all

Most of my other characters ships come from a varying array of naming schemes. Some might be from the Honorverse (Fearless, Nike, Unconquerable) or like my science officer, are slightly religious based (Paladin, Bishop, Archbishop)

My main ship, The Mackinaw is of course named after the USCG Cutter of the same name. I am from Michigan, and as the most prominent ship in the great lakes, i chose it for my personal command ship. A lot of people in Michigan feel about the Mackinaw the same as us trekkies feel about the Enterprise.

I've taken to naming many of mine after the Essex class carriers, hence the Yorktown and Antietam. Midway is named after the lead ship of the Midway class carriers. What else would you expect from a retired Navy aircraft maintenance Chief?

this was a medical vessel in ww1 and ww2. since my character is a medical officer i only saw it fitting to name my ship accordingly.
