Looking to name my ship the U.S.S. Reaper (as in a gun chamber). Registry will probably be NCC-81206. Course this could change at time of launch.

While I will end up commanding many ships that will fit the role needed for a particular mission, I intend to do be on the front lines, moving in fast, hitting the target hard. The U.S.S. Reaper will be an escort ship. Enemies will see the Reaper (and the 7th Fleet) and know that their end is near.

I've decided on:

U.S.S. COMANCHE
NCC - 1876

I'm a bit of a history buff. The character name I've chosen, Myles Keogh, was a highly decorated civil war officer, and member of the 7th Cavalry. Col. Keogh fought fiercely and bravely during the Battle of the Little Big Horn, but was killed along with more than 200 of his fellow troopers on June 25th, 1876.

Keogh's chosen mount was "Comanche" - a mustang that fought with him through several indian war engagements. Comanche was wounded on several occasions, but always carried Keogh through the battle.

When reinforcements arrived at Little Big Horn, they found Comanche barely alive, suffering from multiple bullet and arrow wounds. It's often touted that Comanche was the only US survivor of the main engagement of the battle. In fact, there were a handful of other US mounts that did 'survive' the battle, but were shot on the battlefield when found a few days later.

Comanche was nursed back to health and was subsequently highly decorated by the US Army. Comanche spent the remainder of his life as a mascot at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was one of only two cavalry horses to be given full military honors upon death.

Comanche was preserved in 1890 and can still be seen at the University of Kansas' Natural History Museum in Lawrence, Kansas.

I saw Comanche for the first time as a child, and was instantly fascinated by his story, and the Battle of the Little Bighorn. I finally made the trip to Montana a few years ago, and walked the path that the battle took. It was well worth the trip.

I think it somewhat fitting that soon, somewhere just past that second star to the left, Keogh and Comanche will ride together again.

USS Maine (ACR-1), a 19th-century ship of the United States Navy, exploded and sank on February 15, 1898 in an event that precipitated the Spanish–American War and also popularized the phrase "Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!" In subsequent years, the cause of the sinking of the Maine became the subject of much speculation. The cause of the explosion that sank the ship remains an unsolved mystery.

The Maine, the first US Navy ship to be named for the state of Maine, was a 6,682-ton second-class pre-dreadnought battleship originally designated as Armored Cruiser #1.

In January 1898, the Maine was sent from Key West, Florida, to Havana, Cuba, to protect U.S. interests during a time of local insurrection and civil disturbances. Three weeks later, on 15 February at 9:40 p.m., an explosion on board the Maine occurred in the Havana Harbor. Later investigations revealed that more than 5 long tons of powder charges for the vessel's 6 and 10 in guns had detonated, virtually obliterating the forward third of the ship.The remaining wreckage rapidly settled to the bottom of the harbor. Most of the Maine's crew were sleeping or resting in the enlisted quarters in the forward part of the ship when the explosion occurred. Two hundred and sixty-six men lost their lives as a result of the explosion or shortly thereafter, and eight more died later from injuries. Captain Charles Sigsbee and most of the officers survived because their quarters were in the aft portion of the ship. Altogether, there were only 89 survivors, 18 of whom were officers.On 28 March, the US Naval Court of Inquiry in Key West declared that a naval mine caused the explosion.

Because of the uproar the sinking of the Maine caused in the United States, President McKinley demanded an immediate investigation into the cause of the explosions. A U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry arrived in Havana and began its investigation. From the four inquiries, two hypotheses have emerged: one, that a mine in Havana Harbor had exploded underneath the battleship, causing the explosion of the magazines; and two, that spontaneous combustion of the coal in bunker A16 created a fire that detonated the nearby magazines.

I'll endeavor, as I progress through my career, to keep that name on my future ship, in memory of the Nebula class USS Ranger that sacrificed itself to defend Khitomer from a Borg Cube.

Named after a famous submarine in the USN. SSN 585 Attack Sub
later there was a Skipjack class of atomic subs in the 80's

NCC 2011 USS Shangi-La I served aboard US Shangri-La CV 38
back in 1958. Ship was later scraped in Tiawan

Just for official record, I modified my NCC number for the USS AKULA. NCC 1266-B, which makes it easier for sequential lettering as I move up to higher level ship commands.
