.. Admiral on the Bridge . .
Lt Adams, take us out of space dock.
put in a course 169 mark 20 DZ, Warp Factor 2.

Mr. Sorvak, I am potentially going into battle and I still don’t know
what "Science Station 2408 v7.2" can do!

Mr. Sorvak >>>
My apologies sir for the delay in my report on the new Science Station 2408 v7.2. Analyzing the new console, most of the systems are the same from the previous version, with the addition of some enhanced cloak detection abilities, an advanced sensor array and directed anyon particle sweeps to control levels of chroniton particles that could cause damage to the ship & its crew.

Mr. Fiddeck, open a comm. to the Solace. Open Sir.

Commander Mikey, a job well done. It is time to assist
the Midway. Snap your cadets to attention, form up in
TF Epsylon and we’ll be on our way. right.

Sims, can you find Ensign Artimus Gordan?
<< Ensign Gordan reporting for duty. Sir!
Please report to Nevada Tactical Squad Team Squad Leader Snow
for “Modified” SATC7 Tactical Shotgun Training,
you will complete this training and become Assistant Squad Leader Gordan. >>

With pleasure, sir!

::Ensign Snow immediately delves into his duties. He is familiar with shotguns from six different worlds and the various uses found for each. He doesn’t let this blind him to the opportunity to learn more.

After acquiring and devouring all the design specs and development notes for the shotgun Snow try’s it out for himself. It’s got a good feel. As efficient as energy weapons are Snow has found the qualities of a loud projectile firearm have their own charm. As a side thought he considers their effectiveness against the Borg shielding which adapted so quickly to phaser and disrupter fire.

Ensign Snow masters the shotgun with alacrity and begins creating a series of training programs. The firearm is a close quarter’s weapon for the most part, so he designs the program with this in mind.

An urban setting. A labyrinthine complex of war torn buildings full of tight halls, dark rooms, and sharp angled alleys populated with all sorts of aggressive bad guys to blow away.

A dense forest thicket with ample cover. The trees are so packed in they serve as impassable walls in some places, the foliage so thick visibility is severely limited, the natives so rabid one could wonder at their sentience.

Finally, a Borg cube. He commands the computer the input the adversaries with all that is known about their defensive and offensive capabilities. It's time to see how this new spin on an archaic weapon fares against the technological monstrosities.

He runs through each program, makes adjustments here, tweaks an encounter there, until he knows them in and out.

Now its time to find some bodies.::

After a long day of preparing training scenarios, running those scenarios himself, and reviewing personell files for prospective candidates for his first tactical squad, Ensign Snow retires to the galley for dinner with a few data pads to coninue his work.

He reviews the various types of ammunition available for the shotgun, and some of its structural specs. A few things have occured to him.

Phosphorous rounds, scatter shot, armor piercing and explosive slugs are all fairly common. What is less common are non lethal rounds for a weapon of this type.

As a Star Fleet officer Snow has learned that if possible the preservation of life is of paramount importance. It is a difficult concept to reconcile for an Andorian tactical officer, but Snow takes it as seriously as he takes the rest of his job.

After doing a little research he comes up with a rough idea. He is no engineer but it seems to him that it may be possible to create a low impact round of wide scatter shot that, at the point of fire, becomes primed with a neuro electric charge. The shot would not have a very long range, in fact it seems it would have a very short range, but would cover a fairly wide area. The pellets would create a sort of net that would, if the concept flies, temporarily short out the nervous systems of any carbon based life forms caught within its field.

His second idea would also require a consultation with an engineer.

As a fairly heavy weapon it seems possible that with very little modification this shotgun could be used as an effective heavy baton. Efforts would have to be made to insure accidental fire was a non possibility. Reinforcing the mechanics would also be needed to make sure no damage was done to the weapon itself. With some nano-carbon materials that added strength would increase the weight by almost nothing. An extra grip could be placed at the end of the barrel without affecting the users ability to aim the weapon, and the butt could also be engineered to offer a better swing.

The next morning...

Lt JG Kingpinn I want you to run drills with your staff, train for any medical emergency you can think of. I dont know what we will be geting into but I want our medical team ready for anything.

Mr. Wolf warp factor 5 if you please . . . but sir, the Admiral said warp 1.5?

Mr. Gordon, Im pleased to have your help. Ive created a series of training programs which will take advantage of the qualities the shot gun has to offer!

:: OOC: please refer to my Oct 8th post on this thread for a full description of these scenarios::

Ive been able to run through them myself but they are designed for squad activities. It will be beneficial to run through them with you.

Ive also added a little suprise to the Borg simulation.

::Mr. Snow and Mr. Gordon run through the various simulations one by one. To get a feel of Ensign Gordon's leadership capabilities Snow has taken a back seat and allowed Gordon to run the missions. It will also better demonstrate Gordons ability to react to the unknown if Snow, the creator of the simulation, is not leading the charge.

The Urban and Forest simulations run without a hitch and Gordon has proved to be an able soldier. The Borg run is last, and that little suprise Snow spoke of makes its appearance.

Snow hasnt had a chance to run against it himself, so it tests his abilities as well.

A VERY large force of Borg was added to the sim, one that offers almost no chance of survival. Shot guns blazing, Snow and Gordon are back to back. Armor piercing rounds fly from the barrels without pause but the swarm keeps coming. All seems lost when an explosion rips through the Borg contingent and a new foe enters the scene.

Three members of species 8472 rip through the last of the Borg as Snow and Gordon regroup. They reload, each packs two rounds of the neuro shock rounds first, and load the rest with armor piercing and high eplosive rounds in alternating order.

They stand and face the obviously aggresive lizard-bug-fluidic-space-monsters.

"Freaks!" the battle cry! They let loose...the neuro shock have no affect, the armor piercers seems to penetrate but not deeply enough, and the explosive arent nearly as impressive against these beasts as Snow would have hoped.

After the computer anounces their defeat the two junior officers go to the galley for a meal.::

I guess its back to the drawing boards, Gordon. You did well in there. Ill go into battle with you by my side any day. Keep your eyes and ears out for any other cadets who show promise. I intend to build a strike force Lt Cabot can be proud of.

With recent reports of possible species 8472 activity, Ensign Snow has become concerned at the ineffectiveness of current weapons tech against these extra-dimensional aliens.

The extreme density of their atomic structure makes them very hard to damage. Conventional weapons are next to useless against them.

After mulling over the problem for some time, and with his recent experiences with new spins on older tech an idea has come to him. The pinacle of projectile weapon tech which has not been commonly used in quite some time could be the weapon they have been looking for.

Rail-Guns. These weapons fire projectiles at extremely high velocity without any need for combustion. They use electro-magnetic fields in series to propel the ammunition. With current tech these weapons should be able to be hand held rather than mounted on large craft as in ancient times.

If one uses ammunition of an appropriately dense element the combined mass and velocity could in theory create a weapon capable of riddling species 8472 full of fist sized holes...

Although the railgun's bullet velocity is very high, it may not be enough to sufficiently harm Species 8472. Their physiology seems to be able to regenerate itself from simple arms attacks. Perhaps if we combine a dense material with a small casing of nanoprobes, the combination may be enough to at least slow their regeneration.

Oh, and returning to Commander Turner's question about Anyon particles, I merely brought the capability to attention in the event we run into the need for cloaking preparation & safety. Anyon particles theoretically have the ability to counter the affects of chroniton particles, which have a temporal altering effect. For instance, if we come across a species with interphase technology, causing an object to be rendered out of phase with our dimension, the use of anyon particles can be used to stabilize its molecules.

In addition, if we happen to encounter the Borg, they use chroniton fields while in transwarp to stabilize their ships. Theoretically, the use of anyon particles in a concentrated area could destabilize their transwarp capabilities.

As for fluidic space, there is still very little I understand about its consistency. As of right now, I do not believe fluidic space exists outside our own temporal dimension, so theoretically anyon particles would not have an affect on fluidic space. In anticipation of future questions, since Species 8472's ships seem to be biologic in nature, I do not know the effects that chroniton particles would have on Species 8472's ship systems. As the old human saying goes, "it may not hurt to try."

Thanks for your input, Sir. Now that you mention it I recall the reports from the Voyager crew. They used modified Bord nano machines in their conflict with species 8472.

I think that delivering the nano with a rail-gun, although it sounds like a lot of fun, may be a bit over kill. A high velocity dart gun with a large ammo capacity would probably be the best bet for a nano delivery system.

We should also consider outfitting our tactical teams with modified hypo-sprays in case combat is taken to close quarters. It seems species 8472 is fond of using their physical superiority in combat, and with good reason. This brings me to my next suggestion.

Body armor. Although it limits our movement and flexibility any conflict with species 8472 will result in serious casulties unless our teams are well protected. Something to soften the blow at least. I dont like the idea of going hand to hand with these monsters, even less so without a good layer of carbon-fiber mesh around my torso.

Indeed sir. A railgun, especially the relative size of it, may be, as you put it..."overkill". Since we're discussing older conventional weaponry, perhaps it would be more prudent to outfit security details/away teams with a combination of high power shotguns & one high powered sniper rifle per group. The rifle for longer range attacks, which will need the extra velocity for penetration and shotguns for closer combat. Each should be armed with armor piercing rounds and nanoprobe casings. This combination would be somewhat more maneuverable and prudent.

As far as armoring our crew, if Species 8472 can rip through bulkheads relatively easy, the armor may do little to limit wounds and merely result in less maneuverability for crewmen.

If armoring against melee attacks from Species 8472 is necessary, perhaps a similar tactic as the Spartan phalanx could be employed. Two crewmen to the front with shields made of Rodinium, one of the hardest materials that we know. Theoretically, if Rodinium is a hard enough material for the Cardassians to use for ship armor, maybe it would be strong enough to withstand an attack from Species 8472. Behind them, 2 crewmen with nanoprobe shotguns and 1 crewman with a nanoprobe enhanced rifle.

Hmm, great idea's Sir! Maybe you belong in tactical! hehehe

This referance to the human Spartan armies recalls more recent tactics used by riot control officers on Earth and Andoria as well.

This train of thought has spawned a new idea. I wonder if the nano probes could be delivered in a cloud.

They have what appears to be nostrils, indicating respiration. Launching a cannister of aerosol nano probes programmed to attack species 8472 (distinguishing and recognizing their gene profile shouldnt be difficult due to their very unique dna structure) into a group of the buggers could be much more effective than trying to take them out shot by shot.

Even with a wide spread shotgun blast, there are advantages to not having to even be within line of sight of the enemy, especially one as dangerous as these.

More study is needed.
