Greetings gentlemen. Now, I've been out of the game for the last two months (working 70+ hour weeks = happy wallet due to massive overtime + mind numbing sleep deprivation), but will be having some time off coming up in May and I'm really looking forward to seeing how things turn out for the new faction.
That said, this will mean a new toon, and I'm curious what your thoughts are as far as character classes go from a role-play perspective. (Eng/Tac/Sci)
I'm torn between the practicality of my Tac, and mating an Engineer with a D'deridex warbird, taking into account the background story I want to create for my character. (How in times of desperation, a lowly Centurion rose to command such a masterful craft.)
Now I'm no military type, but I read a fair bit, and from what I've seen in classic modern navies, those who go on to command larger ships seem to take a slower advancement coming up through engineering vs through fire control which seems to lead to destroyer commands (which would be more in line with the Tac/Escort build). What have ye to say on such matters? I realize that such has next to no bearing on my character bio or how I play, but I like to imagine the story from my character's point of view and anything that I can do to make it more authentic suits me just fine.
Also, has anyone else been thinking of what type of class they'd like to roll?

Idk, my Fed and KDF are tacs. I've thought about an Engineer before, but I dont know. I love them so I will probably go with it for a complete Tac triple threat.

I respect your desire to come at this from a roleplaying angle. Rather than look at the real world navy, however, I'd draw on the vast amount of Trek fiction and cannon material.
For many years, I played FASA's Star Trek RPG and dabbled with a few of the later rules systems. As I recall, command personnel in these games came from various departments but some provided a faster track. Helm, navigation and tactical officers were most likely to go on to later commands. They were followed by security and engineering officers.
Specialists that moved up through the officer ranks were more likely to command specialty ships. So, a science officer would be more likely to command a research vessel.
