We may have warp drive within our lifetime:

In 1994, a physicist named Dr. Miguel Alcubierre published a paper titled, “The Warp Drive: Hyper-Fast Travel Within General Relativity“ and laid down the mathematics now being pursued by NASA's Dr. White.

Some are calling this as analogous to the "Chicago pile" moment of fission reactor technology.
