ALCON,
While en route to Starbase 343 to await fleet assignment my shuttle detected an unusual tachyon pattern 12 ltyrs out. The readings are similar to disruptions caused by Romulan cloaking devises, however, this particular frequency does not match any known Romulan ship on file. This could be a test of a new espionage craft and, if so, despite being deep into Federation space it poses a security risk directly to Starbase 343. I recommend the fleet assign a science vessel to investigate this anomaly.

C. Burnett, LtJG
7th Fleet

we believe the explosion aboard the Nevada can also be traced to a tachyon pulse.
I will pass this on to the Commodore

I hate to mention this but is there any possibility of a Borg connection? They use a tachyon emission to initiate a warp conduit.
There are also historic records of encounters with species utilizing an "out of phase" technique (molecular, temporal, or dimensional) to infiltrate federation vessels undetected, including the placement of explosives.

Species 8472? Was that matter not resolved by Admiral Janeway during Voyager's journey home?
