re: Lifetime Subscription

I've been kicking around the idea of getting a lifetime subscription to STO for a little while now, but I've come to a bit of a dead end. It will eventually pay for itself, but that's quite a long time from now...

$300 / $15 (I'm doing the monthly) = 20 months

That's almost two years. The question here isn't whether I'd be willing to play this game for two years- assuming the user experience remains the same and doesn't get boring, I'd do that. Hell I'd been playing WoW since it came out and the only reasons I stopped was either because of school (no longer a factor) or because I started playing STO (I can only really focus on one MMO at a time).

The biggest hurdle in my decision is whether this game will be around for another two years. I've seen too many games come and go in such a short period of time that this is a very real possibility. Of course none of us can predict whether this will happen to STO or not, so then the question changes to "Do I want to risk it?"

I know many of you have lifetime subscriptions, so I'd like to hear your opinions on the subject.

tl;dr Do I get one?

I invested in the lifetime sub back when it was discounted. I'm obviously betting it will last long enough to break even, and I still think it will go for a while.

yeah i got mine for the 200$ price tag as well. Looking back, from day 1 to today, it was worth it. Would 300$ be worth it from today going out? i dont know. I highly doubt the game will go the way of APB or Tabula Rasa, its holding steady, and with these episodes, its keeping the current subs going.

In my mind, i would get the 300$ version, if i know i was going to keep coming back to the game. might take a few breaks from time to time, but then i can always log in whenever i want. If you can only handle 1 MMO at a time, and have your sights on something new, like TOR, then you might need to think it over.

I'm thinking they need to move the big patches out faster now. Season Three was actually a bit of a disappointment.

They need to move on getting the next faction (Romulans) out soon!!

They need to get meaningful, world PVP, with capturable stations and sector control out....Soon!!

I know they've said they will eventually come out with the Rommies, but that they're waiting til after Season 4 sometime. Possibly into S5 I don't think they have plans for sector control or station takeovers. Have you heard anything that suggests those? Sounds like you want it to be more like EVE. I could be wrong though I haven't been reading up on anything from forums lately.

A Dev response / interview a while back mentioned their (his) desire for "world PVP". Now, I know there are many different definitions of what "World PVP" may mean, but the most common includes using a pvp flag system.

You may recall how that system worked, well in my opinion, in SWG. Although you could not in actuallity "capture" a place, you could certainly control a place by flooding it with pvp flagged players.

Before STO could get to this point, they would have to open up the entire galaxy to Klingion traffic and then unlock the PVP to be used anywhere at any time.

EVE Online on the other hand has a much different system. It has dedicated PVP zones, where mearely entering them means you are prepared for PVP combat. However, it does have a Corp vs. Corp war declaration system, which I could see as a possibility in STO.

I watch a ton of eposides of "STOked in HD" on itunes. This game is going to go a long ways. I can't see it stopping any time soon or even in 2 years.

If I could get one, I totally would!
