re: More on the Light Mass Weapon

One may wonder why the need for such a weapon may exist, certainly at the begining I did. For myself and I believe for those at the top of the project it is about having an equalizer. We do not know what ultimate technologies our enemies may posess, what they could do if pushed. I believe that a deterent is needed a way to wreck destruction on our enemies that will level the playing field. In the past this way of thinking was known by the acronym of MAD, mutual assured destruction, a term used in the late 20th century when the two main warring nations both maintained enough nuclear weapons to destroy each other many times over. The knowledge that ones opponent could hurt you just as bad kept both sides from starting a nuclear conflict.
Deterence is the key. Security for the project is key, and when Starfleet generla command is made aware security will be strengthend further. The main object then as now will be security and keep the weapon out of the hands of those with their own agenda. I believe that is possible, it is believed that only fleet commanders with have the authority for weapons release and only with permission from Starfleet general command.
In an upcoming post I will go into the nature of the weapon, and why it is not applicable for ship to ship combat.

MAD & Deterence are fine and effective up to a point. But if the enemy reaches a point where they believe they can prevent the delivery of our weapons upon them, then the first strike is more important. I hope that parallel plans of Insured Delivery are pursued.

I agree with the first strike scenerio myself I mean when you have your enemy by the balls you would launch multiple nuclear mervs and destroy your enemy before they knew what hit them then you squeeze those ball extra tight until they turn blue, Rape Plunder Pillage no mercy for the nice guy...

re: M.A.D. Discourse

I agree that multiple delivery systems for a given weapon such as the LMS (light mass singularity) weapon is a must as a given method of delivery could be rendered ineffective, and this is certainly in the works. As of now we are in secondary testing and the weapon is considered prototypical, howerver usable the prototypes are. The ability for any agressor to launch a first strike (among relative equals, that is), is never really in doubt. What is in doubt however, is how much will the aggressor be able to prevent, avert or eliminate a counter strike. Thus there is M.A.D. or it's equivialent. An aggressive first strike could be a good thing if you know or have determined that their (the attacked foe's) ability to react or strike back is limited or able to be destroyed. In the 20th century as now, the knowledge that one cannot ever reduce the eniemy's ability to retaliate under a 'threshold of acceptability' is the deterent. Then as now any victory gained thusly would be a Pyrrhic victory and leave the aggressor too damaged to protect themselves from other warring parties.

Mister Kelley, can this weapon be used in open space? If we encountered a new
enemy, one which we are unaware of their home world, and they launched an armada against us, could the LMS be used in this situation?
