http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/15/never-say-neverwinter-cryptic-forced-to-delay-dandd-rpg/

Perfect World is demanding Cryptic work on "a more immersive experience" for Neverwinter and is thus pushing the cooperative RPG's release from the formerly announced 2011 launch window to late 2012.

I wanted to share this with everyone not so much because I care about Neverwinter (though I do, and will in all likelyhood pick up a copy when it's released), but because I think the above quote from the article can give us some insight into how PW might manage Cryptic as a whole, and how that might impact STO.

I take this as a positive sign; that rather than forcing Cryptic to release Neverwinter on an unreasonable timetable, they are going to allow them the time to create a better game - something I'm sure many of us wished Atari had allowed Cryptic to do with STO.

I think PW wants Cryptic to be successful, and I feel this shows they are willing to support them in a way Atari was not.

I'm keeping an eye on NW, since it is the first computer DnD RPG based on 4th Edition that I am aware of.

DnD (in this context) = Dungeons and Dragons

The DnD ruleset has had various editions, and the latest, 4th, made significant changes. This will be the first computer RPG based on that ruleset.

Its always scary when another company takes over your favorite game (or game company) because you never know what road they will take. If PW is tasking Cryptic to do a better job, AND giving them more time to do it in, they just earned a bit more of my respect.

Too many games release dates a dictated by Investors, not quality, which can cause detrimental effects to the game. Point in Case: Age of Conan. Released WAY to soon, all because Funcom Investors wanted to see some return sooner. So the game crashed Hard after the first 2 months.

Funcom has been able to pull it back out though, AoC is now living strong and healthy, something i did not think was possible. Other games have not fared as well (Matrix Online, Tabula Rasa, ect)

I am hoping this bodes well for STO. It seems like PW is weary about making drastic changes, but that they want whats best for the company they just purchased, so some good changes may be coming.
