The first USS Astoria (Screw sloop) was laid down in 1867 by the Philadelphia Navy Yard; launched 10 June 1869; she was renamed Omaha on 10 August 1869; and commissioned 12 September 1872, Captain John C. Febiger in command.

USS Astoria (Screw Steamer) (AK-8) 1917-1921 Originally built by the British as a cargo ship in launched 1902. In 1914, she was acquired by a German shipping company, until she was siezed by US Customs and later acquired by the US Navy in 1917. She was originally classed as an AK-7 hauling equipment, freight and men to France during WWI. After the war, she travel through the Panama Canal for duty on the West Coast, eventually joining the Pacific Fleet, and was she was reclassed to an AK-8. She made her way back to the East Coast and was decommissioned in Boston in 1921.
